Chapter Eight
âLet me have your reins. You go,â Lukas said as they neared the castle doors of the new Alunan capital in Tate. Kamron threw Lukas his reins and ran for the steps of the castle. He wound through the corridors toward the backdoor of the throne room, nearly running into a wall along the way.
They were late.
He had on his squire uniform, as was proper for attending Lukasâs ceremony, and wouldnât be out of the ordinary for attending his own, but usually one arrived at their own knighting clean and wrinkle free. Not with mud on their boots and horsehair covering every inch of them.
He reached the hall behind the throne room and groaned. It was empty, meaning all the squires had moved into the hall, but he didnât think he was so late that the ceremony was over. He slowly inched open the door.
âRise Lady Hellen of Onan, Knight of Aluna.â The audience cheered the new knight.
Kamron sagged with relief. There were two more squires to go. He opened the door a little further and slid through the gap. He stood straight and walked carefully until he stood behind the other squires at the side of the stage, several hundred people standing before them. Kamron turned his head subtly to see if anyone had noticed him, and his eyes connected with Dess, who stood off to the side in front of the squire line as Kamronâs sponsor.
Kamron broke eye contact and faced front as if he hadnât just faced down a raging bochnid.
âCome forth, Squire Branson,â King Silas said, and the squire in front of Kamron moved to the dais.
At the sound of his fatherâs voice, for the first time in over two and a half years, Kamronâs heart rate picked up again.
After their serious talk on the long ride south, Lukas and Briony had pulled him into jovial conversation, lightening the mood and taking his mind off what he rode toward. They hadnât ridden with any haste, and the importance and significance of the journey sunk to the background and he enjoyed the ride with his friends. Heâd focused on fielding the conversation between Lukas and Briony as he tried to engage her, and she teased him. Then she switched to teasing Kamron, telling Lukas he wasnât really there for him, only for the Lady Siblina who might have attended. Lukas laughed and teased Kamron along with her. Kamron only rolled his eyes and rode ahead, glad his best friend and Briony were at last bonding over something.
âSquire Kamron, come forth,â Queen Elodie said, and Kamron was suddenly back in the throne room, his heart threatening to pop out of his chest. His hands trembled, and he clasped them behind his back before stepping forward. He couldnât meet his parentsâ eyes as he knelt before them.
His mother raised a sword and lowered it to each of his shoulders, tapping gently, while his father spoke. âRise Sir Kamron of Tross, Knight of Aluna. Your courage and intelligence will be a strength to this land.
